Fiji & Laucala Island

The place

We're spending our 20th anniversary on a private island

Laucala might be the nicest place in the world.

It is an extraordinary private island in northern Fiji. It was first purchased by Malcolm Forbes (who is buried there) and later bought by Dietrich Mateschitz, one of the cofounders of Red Bull. The whole island is one resort, with twenty-five villas, each with its own pool and a view over either the ocean or the jungle. It has the highest staff-to-guest ratio in the world. Everything is included. If it's legal, they will do it for you.

The food is farm to table — from the farm on the island, where they grow 90% of their food — and goes from barefoot on the beach to candlelit in the evening. You can order food from any of the six restaurants on the island to any of the other restaurants (want Thai at the Italian place? Sure!) Every villa gets a personal butler who takes care of every detail. You can spa, golf, scuba dive, sail, bike, jet ski, power boat, ride horses, and even ride their submarine (!), all included. Laucala even has its own air service, Air Laucala, to get you there.

We're going in October 2028, for our 20th anniversary and Nick's 50th birthday. We'll start at another resort in Fiji to loosen up and get in the vacation mode, and finish at Laucala.

A typical day might go like this
AM

Under the water

Dive the reef off the island, or leave the scuba gear behind and go down in the submarine.

MIDDAY

Lunch on the beach

Eat barefoot in the sand, ordering from whichever of the six kitchens you like.

PM

Jet skis and champagne

Take a jet ski or a horse down the coast, then go back to your villa, where the butler has the champagne on ice.

NIGHT

Dinner by candlelight

Most of what's on the plate was grown on the island.

Tentative itinerary
Start

Another resort in Fiji

We'll spend a few days somewhere lovely to sleep off the flight and slow down. We're still deciding where.

Finish

Laucala Island

Then Air Laucala flies us to the island, and nobody has to make a decision for the rest of the trip.

We'll split the nights once we've picked the first resort.
